Thrilling finals for the 2011 NEC season at Monza

15/12/11 - The finale of the Northern European Cup was one to remember. With temperatures over 30 degrees, 22 participants and constant fights for podium the last three races of 2011 were a pleasure to watch, as Daniil Kvyat took all victories and Sainz claimed the title and his cup for the 2011 season.

As it was an all-time first for the participants of the Northern European Cup at Monza, the drivers had three free practices to get to know the track. With the necessary preparation, they collected on Saturday afternoon for the two qualificiation sessions. Sunny and warm conditions enabled Jordan King for MP Motorsport to set the fastest time in qualifying on 1 minute 50.835 seconds, with an average speed of almost 190 kilometres an hour. The second qualifying went even faster, with Daniil Kvyat on pole position for the second race and penultimate race of the season (1 minute and 50.563 seconds).

Although Kvyat had qualified for pole, he had a bad start and lost the leading position in the first few meters to Jordan King. Not for long however, because the young Russian fought back and overtook King in the second lap of the race. After a disastrous event in Most, bad luck seemed to remain on Frank Suntjens side when he had to park his 210 bhp Formula Renault at the end of the Ascari chicane. The car was too damaged, so racecontrol had to interfere and neutralise the race with the safety car, enabling the marshalls to tow the Speedlover car from the field.

After the safety car was withdrawn, two laps later, the fight for the front continued. Especially third place was an ongoing battle between Belgian Alessio Picariello and Swiss Christof von Grunigen. After overtaking each other multiple times, it seemed to be the Daltec driver who had the advantage of driving on his home track, securing the last podium position in the first race. Even though the gap between Kvyat and King remained very small during the entire race, Kvyat was never threatened by King, securing his fifth win this season.

The second race of the weekend started with a small delay on Sunday at 12.35. Kvyat left from pole, but just behind him Johan Jokinen had stalled on the starting grid, experiencing problems with his gearbox. Luckily, all 21 competitors avoided the incident and headed for the first turn. There, things got ugly for Josh Hill, as he collided and damaged the front of his car, forcing him to visit pit lane and prematurely ending his second race at Monza.

The first fight started between Jordan King and FIA Talent Stoffel Vandoorne for second place. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz, coming from a sixth position was working his way up through the field and driving to third in just three laps. In the fifth, he passed Jordan King and shot to the lead when Kvyat missed the chicane. Kvyat restored however, taking back the lead in the seventh lap of the race. King however, started a continuous battle with Carlos Sainz for second position, overtaking the latter in the eight lap. Sainz never gave up, passed King in the Parabolica turn in the tenth lap and started a hunt for Kvyat, who was still leading the race. Although Sainz got to half a second, the race was just a lap short for the Spanish to pass his teammate, leaving Kvyat with his second victory of the weekend.

Stoffel Vandoorne had earned pole position, as the grid for the third race is composed by the result of the first race, with the six first drivers reversed. Vandoorne kept the lead for the first laps, while there was a first fight just behind him. King and Picariello were battling for second place, and Daniil Kvyat was unleashed from the sixth position, catching up fast. King passed Picariello, but the move of the game was for Kvyat. The young Russian for Red Bull got to King and Picariello in just one lap, leading the field.

Unfortunately, Picariello hit the curbs in the last round, eliminating himself in the last few meters of the race. Vandoorne thankfully took his second place, followed by King. The young Brit took his third podium place this weekend, bringing home a fantastic result for the Dutch team of MP Motorsport.

At the end of race 3, Carlos Sainz was rewarded with the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup of 2011. Together with Daniil Kvyat in second, and Vandoorne in third, he wins a test in the Formula Renault 3.5 World Series car planned for the upcoming November.
