NEC crowns Jake Dennis as 2012 champion in Spa – Francorchamps

15/10/12 - The Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup saw the final round of the 2012 season this past weekend at the world famous track of Spa – Francorchamps. With 36 drivers from 20 nationalities, it was definitely an action packed winner with Josh Hill winning on Sunday morning, and the surprising victory of Yu Kanamaru in the afternoon. After the last two races, it was also time to crown the 2012 NEC champion: Jake Dennis of the Fortec Motorsport team.

The qualifying sessions on Saturday had been under dry conditions. Mikko Pakari had set the fastest times for both sessions and so earned a double pole (2:21.495 and 2:20.859).

On Sunday morning, it was time for the first race of the almost forty participants. Although there was a clean start, without any incidents, the first crash happened in the second sector of the track when Gustavo Lima, Jakub Smiechowski and Ignazio D’Agosto met in Les Combes. Because there were too many cars on track, the racecontrol deployed the safety car in order to safely clean the track of the vehicles. As this turned out to be more problematic than expected in first instance, the race had to be interrupted with a red flag.

At the restart, Pakari was again the fastest man, but Hill and Dennis of the Fortec NEC team quickly found a better pace. Both passed Pakari in the following lap. Meanwhile there was an interesting fight between Meindert van Buuren, Jeroen Slaghekke and Andrea Pizzitola in the places 13 until 15, leaving no room for mistakes. The second safety car was deployed after a spin of Lena Heun, who left her car at a ninety-degree angle on the middle of the track. As it caused a dangerous situation for the crowded field, safetycar caught the full grid until the car had been removed. After two laps, the race could be resumed.

Jake Dennis experienced what the tricky conditions on the renowned track can do; after shortly touching the grass, he hit the guardrail and scored his first blank result of the 2012 season. In his flight, he took Pakari off track as well, leaving second and third place to Alessio Picariello and Gabriel Casagrande.

The very last race of the 2012 season started with half an hour delay at 15.50 on the afternoon of Sunday the 14th of October. Only four degrees Celsius and light rain set the conditions for the 20th race of the season. After the whole field left at switching off the lights, Pakkari lost his lead to the Belgian Alessio Picariello for SL Formula Racing. Both cars were on slicks, but as the race progressed the rain tyre seemed to be the better choice. All cars that had chosen for that tyre were smoothly making their way to the front of the field, passing multiple cars each lap.

The Tony Kart drivers of KTR, Kanamaru and Colome, took control of the field in the third lap, giving the NEC a Japanese leader for the time in its existence. Rookie Sandro Lukovic, driving the Formula Renault for the first time on this track, put down an impressive performance by securing third position. Although the falling rain and low temperatures made the track very risky, the entire grid showed off their gained experience over the season. Just one yellow flag because of a spin in the busstop chicane, did not get in the way of a great ending of a spectacular NEC season.

The three winners of the Northern European Cup, Jake Dennis, Jordan King and Josh Hill receive a test in the Formula Renault 3.5 running in the World Series by Renault programme.
