Parry takes charge at Nurburgring

21/04/13 - Caterham's talent Matt Parry (Fortec Motorsport) took two convincing wins at the Nurburgring. As the two Lotus F1 Junior Team drivers Ocon and Tunjo joined him for the first race, the second podium consisted of Kaufmann’s Gustav Malja and Fortec’s Pakari. With his two wins, Parry took a dominant lead in the current standings of the Northern European Cup.

Oscar Tunjo (Josef Kaufmann Racing) had qualified as the fastest of 35 drivers and earned pole for the first race held on Sunday morning, the 21st of April. His Swedish teammate Malja set a front row lockout for the German team. Russian Mavlanov (RC Formula) did a great job with a qualification time earning him a fourth place on the grid.

Parry had a good start, but Tunjo managed to keep control of the entire field up to and including the first corner. Not all cars managed to survive the first bottleneck of the race, as Malja touched the faster Mavlanov, who in his turn rocketed Jake Dennis of track. There was no severe impact on the car of the 2012 champion, but the damage was so serious the car could not start in the second race.

After Parry took the lead in the second turn, not much changed at the front of the field. A little further on, there were some remarkable performances of drivers such as Aurelien Panis, son of ex Formula One driver Olivier Panis. Aurelien found his way to the front of the field and managed to finish the first race in fourth place. Just behind him, Victor Sendin (AV Formula) showed his talent by driving from 14th to sixth place in just 25 minutes.

The second and last race of the series started on Sunday afternoon at 15.10. Parry left from pole, Malja started second. Directly behind there was the open space of Jake Dennis. At the start Pakari quickly took third place and followed behind Parry and Malja. In the meantime, the so far great performing Shahaan Engineer saw his race end in the gravel, as well as Miika Laiho and Simon Stoller. After 25 minutes, the chequered flag fell for Parry, taking a double win this Sunday.

The Brit now has a firm lead in the current standings after five races of the Northern European Cup. The drivers that follow (Ocon, Pakari, Rowland and Malja) are all guestdrivers from the EUROCUP. Considering they do not participate in all rounds of the NEC, the second best scoring driver is Shahaan Engineer. Norwegian Dennis Olson is currently the third best qualified NEC driver.

The next and third round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup takes place during the Blanc Pain Endurance Series at Silverstone on the 1st and 2nd of June.
