Spectacular weekend for NEC at Spa – Francorchamps

27/07/13 - The Formula Renault 2.0 NEC saw two great races at the world famous track of Spa Francorchamps. The fourth round of the championship fulfilled the promise of an action packed weekend. With a victory for Oscar Tunjo on Friday and three different teams on the podium on Saturday, the NEC set another example of competitive racing.

The weekend started on Friday morning with a double pole for Oscar Tunjo (Josef Kaufmann Racing). The Lotus Development Driver was in both races accompanied by Jack Aitken (Fortec Motorsports).

The first race of the weekend followed shortly after qualifying. Although Tunjo had the best start, Jack Aitken managed to take the lead in the first lap of the race. Not all cars managed to get through the first corner without damage; son of former Formula One driver Deletraz got spun around. Fortunately he could continue his way after the rest of the field had passed. For five laps Aitken managed to keep the 27 car field behind him, until Tunjo made use of a small mistake and got by.

In the first half of the race Aitken, Tunjo and Parry, in that order, had a remarkable gap towards the rest of the cars. After Tunjo took the lead, it was not long before Aitken had Parry on his tail. It took until the very last lap for Parry to win the battle with his teammate, securing a second place on the podium.

The second race of the weekend was held on Saturday morning at 9.45. Under threatening skies all cars left to La Source with Tunjo in the lead. Not long however, because Matt Parry was the fastest driver on track and took the lead. In an attempt to get back in front, Tunjo made a move to the left. It resulted in contact and a heavy crash in the barrier, ending the so far flawless weekend of the Columbian.

Andrea Pizzitola (ART Junior Team) drove a strong race on Saturday, rewarding himself with a deserved podium on second place. Roaul Owens (Mark Burdett Motorsport) also put down an impressive performance during this weekend, always being among the front runners. He scored his first podium this season, completing the podium in third place.

Matt Parry now has a comfortable advantage in the current standings. He leads by 123 points after 9 races. The race for second place is far from over with the next three drivers in just a ten point range. The season continues next week at Assen, with the fifth round of the championship during the Gamma Racing Day.
