Parry NEC Champion 2013, Rowland rules the weekend

13/10/13 - The Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup has crowned its champions during the Finale Races at Zandvoort. Matt Parry secured his title in the first race of the weekend. Meanwhile, Oliver Rowland proved to be a class of his own under the extreme weather conditions and took home two victories for the Dutch squad of MP Manor Motorsport. Due to the heavy rain, extreme winds and cold, the third race of the weekend was cancelled.

Rowland had qualified for both pole positions on Saturday morning. Alfonso Celis (Fortec Competition) put down a very strong qualifying and put his car on second place. Matt Parry was found on sixth place, whilst his main opponent Jack Aitken started nineth. Parry would be champion as long as he finished top six, Aitken would only have a chance when winning.

Steijn Schothorst took a third place at the start, as Raoul Owens (Mark Burdett Motorsport) passed Roman Mavlanov (RC Formula) for fourth place. Rowland was incredibly fast and already had a six second gap after just four laps. Unfortunately for young Alfonso Celis, his great qualifying could not be turned into valuable points and fell back in the rankings lap after lap.

Schothorst moved up to second, followed by Raoul Owens. It was a great fight, lasting for several laps. It took until the seventh lap for Owens to find an opportunity to get by the young Dutchman.

In the last phase of the first race, Andres Mendez and Julio Moreno met in the eighth turn and caused a safety car situation. The whole field drove the last few laps behind safety car, until the field was released to finish. Owens made a mistake at the restart, spinning in the last sector of the track. The whole field came by and Owens sadly had to see his second place turn into a twentieth position. Steijn Schothors and Andrea Pizzitola gratefully took the last two podium places and finished second and third. Parry finished fourth, securing his title two races before the end of the season.

The second race started on Sunday morning .The dry and cold weather conditions of Saturday had been traded in for extremely wet and even colder circumstances. Because of the heavy weather, race control decided that the second race of the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC started behind safety car. The 31-car field was released after two laps. Rowland took off, creating another considerable gap towards his competition. Matt Parry managed to pass Raoul Owens, who in his turn did another attempt to regain his place. Both cars had contact, Parry ended up in the gravel and safety car was deployed. Owens finally stranded that same lap in the Masters turn together with Andrea Pizzitola. After two laps the field was released again.

At that time Rowland was leading, Celis was following in second position and Roman Mavlanov was in third. One of the close fights on track was taking place between Philopaz Armand and Jakub Dalewski. The most exciting one however, was for second place between Celis, Mavlanov and Schothorst. The winner of the fight was Roman Mavlanov taking second place, followed by Alfonso Celis who scored his first podium today.

The last race was scheduled for the late afternoon of Sunday the 13th, but the severe weather conditions called for a teammanager meeting short after three in the afternoon. When all teammanagers where asked on their opinion of the racing conditions, the teams indicated they found the circumstances too severe to drive. At that moment, the organization decided to cancel the third race of the weekend and the last race of the season.

As a consequence, Jack Aitken ended second after Matty Parry. Dennis Olsen (Josef Kaufmann Racing) finished the season in third position. Oliver Rowland put a record by finishing each race he participated in on the podium and took a final fourth place in the standings. Fortec Motorsports was crowned as the best team, followed by Josef Kaufmann Racing and ART Grand Prix.
