Carlos Sainz claims 2011 NEC title in Most

29/08/11 - Carlos Sainz Junior has claimed the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup in the penultimate round of the 2011 season. Two second places and one win were enough to secure the title this year, whilst teammate Daniil Kvyat wrote both other NEC victories at the Truck Prix to his name.

The weekend in the Czech Republic opened on Thursday the 25th of August with four free practices, followed by another two on Friday. The dry and warm weather circumstances enabled the 25 competitors to get to know the track and to find the right set up for the weekend. On Saturday morning, the young race drivers proved their skills during the two qualifying sessions, dividing the pole positions between Daniil Kvyat for the first race (1 minute 32.137) and Carlos Sainz for the second (1 minute 31.450). The grid for the third race would be determined by the result of the first race on Saturday afternoon, reversing the first six drivers on the grid.

After the warm and dry settings of the Thursday and Friday, temperatures dropped by 20 degrees on Saturday, skies filled with heavy clouds. After the starting lights released the twenty-five formula cars, a huge collision was formed in the second turn of the track. Von Gartzen spun, causing the other competitors to find ways around him. As a result, Suntjens found a less lucky way to the back of Meindert van Buuren, prematurely ending the race for both Dutchmen. The situation called for a safety car situation, which was withdrawn after just one lap.

The race got a sudden twist when third placed Alessio Picariello met with Jordan King in the last lap, giving the last podium place to Stoffel Vandoorne. The young FIA talent followed Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz in that order to the ceremony after 25 minutes of racing.

The start of the second race at 11.40 on Sunday morning seemed like a repetition of the first, as another collision between Suntjens and Van Buuren happened in the first few meters of the game. The action on Sunday morning was to be found in the 10th to 15th place, where Villemi, Vandoorne, Von Gartzen, Van de Laar, Rump and Gonda were fighting for position and changing places on and off. The victory belonged to Carlos Sainz, joined by Daniil Kvyat and Jordan King for second and third place.

The regulations determined that the sixth position of race 1 starts on pole for the last race on Sunday and put Josh Hill for KTR in front of the field, accompanied by John Bryant Meisner on the first starting row. The starting procedure was interrupted however, because a power cut hit the facilities of the Czech racing track. After time keeping and race control had been restored, the racing distance was shortened by 3 minutes and the cars were on their way for the last race of the weekend.

Daniil Kvyat was unleashed and overtook the lead after a very fast start. Just behind him, Oskari Kurki – Suonio and Martin Rump collided, but luckily further chaos could be avoided. Kvyat lead the entire race, taking a 12 second lead towards teammate Carlos Sainz. Bryant – Meisner put down a strong performance, keeping his position in the front and finishing in third place.

Earning another 24 points with his second place, Carlos Sainz has now a 98-point lead to his main opponent Daniil Kvyat. With only three races to go this season, and 90 points to divide for the three wins, the young Russian is 8 points shorts of the possibility to defeat his Spanish competition.

The last round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup will be held at the Grand Prix track of Monza, Italy from the 23rd until the 25th of September.
