Amweg wins Race 1 of the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC after a perfect start

24/05/14 - After a very rainy morning, two drivers of ART Junior Team finished race 1 of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup at Silverstone in first and second place. The Swiss driver Levin Amweg won, French teammate Aurélien Panis followed.

After it had been raining heavily in the morning, the track at the start of the race was still a bit wet especially the curbs. For safety reasons, two formation laps were run and shortened the race distance from 25 to 22 minutes.

In the qualifying session on Friday afternoon both ART Junior team drivers put themselves on the front row. The drivers who qualified third and fourth also finished in these positions. It was Jake Hughes (Mark Burdett Motorsport) in third followed by the Swede Gustav Malja (Josef Kaufmann Racing) in fourth.

Steijn Schothorst (Manor MP Motorsport) started from eights to finish fifth to leave the Fortec Motorsports drivers, Ben Barnicoat and Seb Morris behind him. Morris spun during the race and finished a dissapointing 14th.

Aurélien Panis, son of Olivier Panis, could not overtake his teammate Amweg and had to be satisfied with second place. Jake Hughes drove a steady race to finish third and stood on the podium for the first time.

Ukyo Sasahara (Euronova Racing), who was second in race 1 at Monza, did not have a good qualifying session and had to be happy with a tenth place in the race. The leader of the championship, Louis Delétraz, had to be satisfied with a 13th place.

Tomorrow, Sunday 25th of May, it will be Seb Morris and Ben Barnicoat (both Fortec Motorsports) who will start from the first row. Levin Amweg starts from 12th, so it will be an exiting race.
