Malja’s second win of the season, Barnicoat remains title favorite

20/09/14 - The Swede Gustav Malja (Josef Kaufmann Racing) drove in the second race of the final weekend of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup at the Nürburgring, to a comfortable win. The Czech Josef Zaruba (AVF) celebrated his first podium with a second place in front of Saturday's winner Andrea Pizzitola (MP Manor Motorsport).

Right at the start Gustav Malja took the lead of Josef Zaruba, who secured his first pole position in qualifying. Pizzitola unsuccesully pushed Zaruba, he remain third.

At the start in places four to seven were the four title contenders; Louis Déletraz (Josef Kaufmann Racing), Ben Barnicoat, Seb Morris (both Fortec Motorsports) and Stein Schothorst. Barnicoat passed his main rival Déletraz in the first lap and expanded his lead.

Barnicoat still leads with 16 points ahead of Déletraz. But tomorrow the Briton will only start from 15th while Déletraz starts from fourth, so the chances of the Swiss are still there. Seb Morris and Stein Schothorst are out of the title contention. Both are tied in third place, which yields an additional fight in the final. After all, it is about the opportunity to test in a Formula Renault 3.5.

1. Gustav Malja (Josef Kaufmann Racing): "It was a better race than yesterday as I started second and finished first. Once I passed Zaruba I controlled the race. I had a good race pace. I want to thank the team for all their work this year and I feel that the pieces of the puzzle are finally falling into place."

2. Josef Zaruba (AVF): " I had a good start but Gustav was just faster. Miki, my teammanager, told me to look forward and not too much in the mirror. It is my first season in single seaters and it is my first podium. I feel I have grown this season, specially after Spa I got better and quicker. Not only did I win a trophee here but my manager promised me a trip to Ibiza, so I am double happy."

3. Andrea Pizzitola (Manor MP motorsport): "I had a good start but just not as good as yesterday. I pushed the maximum but I find it more difficult here to overtake as you loose downforce in the quick corners. I started on third and finished third, it is always good to be on the podium again."
